How Long Should You Brush Your Teeth?

The ADA consensus recommendation is two minutes, twice a day, with fluoride toothpaste.

Why timers can help

Many powered brushes include a two-minute timer, and some add 30-second prompts to divide attention across the mouth. A timer is useful only if it helps you follow a complete routine.

What about “faster” toothbrush claims?

A multi-surface brush may contact several surfaces at once, but that should not be interpreted as permission to ignore general professional guidance. Follow your dentist’s advice and the product’s instructions.

General brushing guidance follows the American Dental Association: brush twice daily for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste; manual and powered brushes can both be effective.
